Car Hire in Brittany

One of the best known regions in France, Brittany lies at the North West tip of the country and is surrounded by both the English channel and the Bay of Biscay. With numerous ferry ports and airports in the region, it’s very easy to get from the UK to Brittany, where hiring a car makes getting around a whole lot easier.

Whether you are visiting the 10,000 square mile area to visit the beaches, war memorials or to sample some of the fantastic architecture, Brittany offers some wonderful places for tourists to visit, both on and off the beaten track.

Road signs in the region are much like the ones found in Wales, with French at the top and the local dialect, Breton, or Gallo, depending on the area at the bottom.

The biggest cities in Brittany are Rennes, the capital, and Brest.

The Beaches

With coast surrounding three sides of the region, the beaches are Brittany are vast and varied. On the south coast you can find sheltered large sandy beaches, which are ideal for sunbathing and spending time relaxing on, whilst water sports enthusiasts may prefer the more open north facing beaches that get battered by waves and winds from the Atlantic. Brittany is a great place for surfing and body boarding because of its exposure to the waves coming in from the open ocean.

Mont St.Michel

This mediaeval abbey could have come straight out of a fairytale and is located on a beautiful rock, just out to sea. Now a world heritage site it is one of the most visited tourist attractions in the country but can only be accessed when the tides are right.

St.Malo

St. Malo is known as the ancient city of pirates and if rocks could talk, there would be many a juicy tale to hear. As it is, the granite ramparts protect the city from the crashing waves and the museum gives a fascinating insight into the city’s history.

Dinan

Dinan is by far and away one of the most beautiful places we’ve ever visited, and is located just outside the larger town of Dinard. It’s a small and quaint town surrounded by ramparts, and the choice of small cafes and boutiques makes it a wonderful place for a visit.

Brest

Brest is a traditional naval port, and still has lots of naval history, which can be found in the shops, museums and restaurants in the city. With shops, cinemas art galleries and much more, there is plenty to do in Brest. Our favourite is the aquarium, Oceanopolis.

Lorient

A city which once controlled most of the exports in and out of India from France, the city is now famous for its submarines, with both a museum and a submarine port which offers guided tours throughout the year.

Guerande

A tiny city which has a huge medieval wall around the outside, the small streets, boutiques and art shops make it a very pleasant visit at any time of year.
