Car Hire in Rennes
Rennes Car Hire
Rennes is the capital city of Brittany in France and is often overlooked when people are looking for places to visit. I’d say wrongly so, but it does mean it’s quieter for those who do decide to visit this beautiful city. The tenth largest city in France, the town has only 200,000 people living there, and around a third of those are students.
This makes it even quieter during the holiday seasons and also means the town has some great bars and places to visit at night.
Student night if you’re in the town during term time is a Thursday, and unlike students in England most are very pleasant, welcoming and you will be able to have a good time.
During July the city hosts it ‘Festival des Tombees de la Nuit’ where the streets fill up with visitors enjoying the free street entertainment.
The city itself is very easy to access from the UK, and with regular flights from Southampton, Exeter, Birmingham and Ireland there are plenty of visitors from the UK every year. With the airport just three miles from the city, hiring a car is a very easy way to get to your hotel and around the area during your stay.
Things to do when hiring a car in Rennes
Thabor
The Thabor is a park in Rennes which offers some outstanding beds of plants you’ll never have seen before. With roses, trees from Africa and some of the rarest flowers in the world you will not be able to help being amazed by the scenery on offer.
Outside Rennes is the beautiful area that is Brittany and there is plenty to see. Many sites also offer discounts to visitors under the age of 26, although if your under 26 and hiring a car you’ll end up paying more in hire costs and will end up about even by the end of your break.
Mont-Saint Michel
Mont saint-Michel is a beautiful world heritage site on an island just off the Normandy coast. You’ll want to take a walk to the top of the hill to visit the beautiful abbey of St Michel, a Norman Benedictine abbey that has been well preserved.
The bus to the island can cost as much as £15, but driving is the easiest option. Try to arrive early to avoid car park queues.
Saint Malo
A stunning coastal town, surrounded by medieval stone walls, Saint Malo is a lovely place to visit for the day. Easily accessible by car, you’ll spend hours wondering around the quaint little streets, taking in the shops, cafes and boutiques around the town centre.
You may also want to taste some wine at the chateau or visit the first tidal power station built anywhere in the world. 200,000 people a year visit so it’s definitely popular.
Cobac Park
A theme and water park mixed into one, Cobac Park is great fun for the whole family, throughout the year. The water park is very popular in the summer, and the nature trail gives you a mixture of things to do if it gets a little bit cold.
With mini golf, swing ball, quad bikes and ponies, there is something for everyone, and with 12 hectares of wooded areas to explore you’ll have a great day out at the park.
Foret de Rennes
The Foret de Rennes is the Rennes Forest and is about 10 miles North East of the city. Spread over almost 3000 hectares, the forest is huge and offers a variety of trails to explore.
Photographers will have a particularly good time taking photos of some wonderful nature in the forest.
