Car Hire in Corsica

A stunning island, located just off the coast ofFrancein the Mediterranean Sea, Corsica sits just above theislandofSardiniaand has a fantastic summer climate, as well as being relatively warm all year round. The island itself is a good size and has lots of stunning beaches and inland attractions. As with all islands of that size, the best way to get around is to hire a car, and to make your way to the places you want to visit.

During the summer the main beaches can get very crowded, so having a car to get you off the beaten track can be a real advantage, and with some stunning scenery in the mountainous central regions you really won’t run out of things to see on this stunning island.

Places to visit when hiring a car in Corsica

Corsica National Park

Set over around 2,500 square miles, around 40% of the island is made up of theCorsicaNational Park, a stunning park which has been created to protect the islands wildlife.

Featuring the highest mountain range on the island, the park was established in 1972 and is home to golden eagles and bearded vultures, as well as wildcats, dear and boars for those who enjoy bird watching or nature spotting.

Gorges de Spelunca

Located on the west of the island are the stunning Gorges de Spelunca. Running between the villages of Ota and Evisa, the river Spelunca runs down the bottom of the gorge, and runs red in some areas because of the rocks it runs over. With a number of pools and shallow areas to jump in to cool down, the 5km gorge can be easily navigated in a day, if not half for faster walkers.

One of the highlights of the gorge are the two stone bridges which cross the gorge at various points. If you’re not into walking and hiking yourself, your hire car can take the brunt of the work and the D84 runs the length of the gorge, giving stunning views of the river below.

Scandola Nature Reserve

Created in 1975, Scandola Nature Reserve is another UNESCO world heritage site inFrance, and covers almost 2000 hectares of land and sea. You’ll have to drive and park in Calvi, before getting on a boat to tour the beautiful waters. There are no roads into the nature reserve at all.

With hundreds of stunning inlets, caves and beaches a boat trip is one of the best ways to explore the nature reserve, and with seal and dolphin colonies regularly seen in the area you are sure to find sights you won’t see anywhere else.

Palaghju

Located just inland from Sartene, the prehistoric site of Palaghju has almost 4000 years of history and features 258 megaliths and 70 menhirs. Although some of the stones have now fallen down, the area is great for reflection and is a humbling place to visit. It’s also the largest collection of menhirs and megaliths in the Mediterranean.
