But this isn’t just a fly-and-flop destination. You’ve got attractions like the Karandila Nature Reserve in the Blue Mountains, the UNESCO-protected, Rila Monastery and the sweet-smelling Valley of Roses.

The capital, Sofia, is worth a look, too. With 300-plus bars, restaurants and clubs to its name, it makes for a great night out. Like the postcard so far? Then it’s just a matter of where to check in. For a cosmopolitan kick, try Bourgas. As well as a fantastic beach, the resort’s clutch of galleries and museums tot up the bonus points. Or maybe step the pace down in Blue-Flag status Duni, a popular family pick, or laid-back Ozbor, with its mountain backdrop.

The beaches in Bulgaria are phenomenal, with every possible activity from water-skiing and para-sailing to fishing, volleyball and banana boat rides.

Sunny Beach and Golden Sands are appropriately named and Nessebar, has more beach than you’ll ever need on one holiday! Old Nessebar is a UNESCO-protected site, and it’s a wonderfully atmospheric place to relax with a glass of the excellent Bulgarian wine.

Should you want a meal with your wine, Bulgarian cuisine is hearty and spicy. Classic dishes include stuffed peppers and meatballs and many restaurants will stage a show during the evening, often with traditional music and dance. For something more lively, why not head for Sunny Beach or fashionable Bourgas, which is also a good place to find handicrafts such as ceramics, wood carvings and carpets.
