The city ofDijonis best known as being the home of the world’s best mustard, but is also a wonderful city, full of historical buildings and culture. Getting toDijonis pretty simple if you can get to a train station inFrancefirst, but the local airport only handles internal flights and private jets. If you don’t have one of those you’ll have to get the train to the station, which connects directly to Lyon,Parisand Nice. In fact if you get the Eurostar toParis, it’s only another hour and three quarters toDijonand trains run every hour.

Musee des Beaux-Arts

Found in the eastern wing of the palace, the Museum of fine arts is known as one of the best in the whole country. Made up of several galleries, you’ll enjoy both the rooms themselves, as well as the art on the walls, and you’ll be amazed at the amount of detail and time that has gone into building the palace itself.

Inside the museum the most popular room is the guard room, a wood panelled room with a beautiful gothic fireplace.

Palais des Ducs

The palace which takes its place at the heart of the city and was once home to the most powerful duke inBurgundy. The palace overlooks the beautiful public square, the Place de la Liberation, which was designed by one of the people who designedVersaillesin 1686. The palace today is used by several people, with the eastern wing now a museum, and the western wing the City Halls.

You can climb the Tour Philippe le Bon and on clear days see all the way toMont Blanc.

Cathedrale St-Benigne

The cathedral was built on top of the tomb of St Benignus, who is believed to have been the first man to bring the message of Christianity to the Burgundyregion. The crypt is all that remains of the original abbey built in the 11th century, but the stunning cathedral around it is well worth a visit, if just for the stain glassed windows alone.
