Car Hire in Toulon

Toulon is a stunning military harbour town located in the south of France and looks out over the Mediterranean sea. The towns harbour was ideal for its role as a military harbour thanks to the islands just off the harbour, which create a natural defence for ships and boats from both the enemy and the weather.

As well as being well known for its boat making, the town is also famous for wine making, fishing, tobacco and even manufacturing aeronautical equipment.

For visitors the city of Toulon is a wonderful place to explore, sunbathe and to enjoy the sights of the city. The port is home to Frances aircraft Carrier, the Charles de Gaulle when she is in port, and the entire Mediterranean French Fleet is based in the harbour walls.

The weather in Toulon is typically Mediterranean and visitors will see the most annual sunshine of anywhere in France in Toulon.

Those with an interest in the French Navy will not be disappointed, with a range of museums and monuments around the city, including the official museum of the French Navy, in the old port.

Things to do when hiring a car in Toulon

There are plenty of things to do, both in Toulon and its surrounding areas. Hiring a car makes reaching the beaches and coastal resorts around the city much easier, especially in the summer months.

Museum of the French Navy

Located on the west side of the old port, the Museum of the French Navy takes you on a historical journey through the life of the French Navy, and concentrates on both the historic defeats and victories around the globe.

The building the museum is located in was one of the few buildings not to be knocked down by the Allies, after been taken by the Germans early in World War Two.

Inside the Museum are a range of model ships, giving an idea of the size of ships through the ages.

The Museum of Asian Arts

Again located in Toulon, the museum presents a wonderful collection of artefacts and pieces of art given to French naval officers during their time in Asia throughout the last five centuries.

Memorial Museum to the Landings in Provence

In memory of the allied landings in Provence at the end of the Second World War, the museum was opened by President Charles de Gaulle in 1964 and was a collection of photos, weapons and medals for guests to look at.

Mourillon Quarter

In the 1950s several beaches were created to attract tourism to the area, and the beaches are certainly worth a visit. During the height of the summer beaches get busy, particularly in the afternoons when the French are not at work.

Les Sablettes

A stunning range of beaches near La Seyne-Sur-Mer, Les Sablettes is arguably the best region for beaches in the area. Very popular with holiday goers and surfers alike, the area has around 10 different beaches, all which can be easily reached by car.

Le Capte

10 miles to the east of Toulon is Le Capte, a pure sand beach with no seaweed. The beach is ideal for playing games in the sea and paddling as the sea dept increases very gradually.

St Cyr

15 miles to the west of Toulon is St Cry, a huge long beach which is popular with families and kite surfers. The sandy beach is great for watching people playing in the sea and is generally very clean.

Toulon Car Hire

Toulon has its own airport although very few planes fly there from the UK. If you wish to fly and hire a car you are better flying to Marseille and hiring a car from there. If you wish to hire a car in Toulon book online and pick the car up from the town centre.
