Car Hire in Ibiza

Although Ibiza is best known for its night-life, it’s also a great place for relaxing. The beaches are long and beautiful and – outside San Antonio and Ibiza Town – the resorts are quieter with more laid back restaurants and bars.

These are great places to sample classic local food like paella and sangria, although other European cuisines can be found at the many international restaurants on the island too.

The beaches are the main attraction during the day, with lots of watersports on offer. But for a bit of local culture – and a break from the beach – why not have a drive over to the Dalt Vila in Ibiza Town.

It’s the original, medieval part of the city, and was declared a World Heritage site in 1991.

Playa d’en Bossa

This great all-round resort is home to Ibiza’s longest stretch of golden sand. And you couldn’t have picked a more convenient resort from which to enjoy Ibiza Town.

Portinatx

Portinatx is a picturesque retreat where pine-covered headlands separate three small bays of fine sand. Spend your holiday on the sands, swimming in the crystal-clear sea and buying gifts at the Sunday hippy market. Evenings here are pretty lively, focusing around a choice of restaurants and bars.

Santa Eulalia

One of Ibiza’s most cosmopolitan resorts, Santa Eulalia combines a marina and great shopping with the traditional holiday attractions of shelving beaches and watersports. The resort’s shops offer everything from designer sunglasses to Spanish pottery, and a market sells crafts and souvenirs. Evening entertainment can be found within your hotel or in a choice of restaurants and bars.

San Antonio Bay

Situated 2km around the coastline from its livelier neighbour, San Antonio Town, the Bay is a more laid-back beach resort with beaches dotted along the coast and plenty of souvenir shops. Boats run from here to the pretty beaches of Cala Bassa and Cala Conta, and there is plenty of nightlife ranging from family bars and restaurants to lively nightclubs.

Port d’es Torrent

Set in a cove at the peaceful southern end of San Antonio Bay, Port d’es Torrent is an ideal escape from the livelier areas of San Antonio. The village has a small selection of shops, bars and restaurants as well as its own sandy beach and is surrounded by pine trees, so it’s ideal for those who want to relax away from the night-life of San Antonio, 5km away.

Cala Llonga

The picturesque resort of Cala Llonga is ideal for those looking for a relaxing base for their family holiday. With a lovely, sandy beach, a selection of bars and restaurants and a weekly hippy market, there’s plenty to keep you amused.

Es Cana

Fringed by pine trees, Es Cana is a friendly place with a selection of bars, cafes and restaurants, and home to the famous ‘hippy market’. Alongside the tiny harbour are soft, sand beaches, some of which offer a variety of watersports.

Booking a hire car in Ibiza

If you want to explore the island on your own, car hire is available at the airport or in any hotel area. The minimum age for car rental is 21.

For driving in Ibiza and Formentera, an EU format Driving License is accepted or an International Driving License available from the AA or RAC. If you are travelling in your own car, the vehicle log book/registration are required. Third party insurance is compulsory; you can obtain a Green Card from your insurance company. Most foreign driving licenses are accepted in the Balearics.

Driving is on the right, and seatbelts are obligatory both in the front and back of cars. As in most of Spain, main roads have a top speed limit of 100 kph (62 mph), urban roads 60 kph (37 mph) and motorways 120 kph (75 mph). The police levy heavy on-the-spot fines for both speeding and not wearing your seatbelt. On-the-spot payment of fines is compulsory.
